Tamarind Art Council presented CONTEMP-NATYAM by Jaan R. Freeman, Romona Mukherjee and student performers of Dakshina Palli, Inc. on March 21, 2008

CONTEMP-NATYAM is a program which draws from the movement vocabularies of Bharata Natyam (South Indian Classical Dance) and American Modern Dance, choreographed by Dakshina's founding Director: Jaan R. Freeman. Freeman’s choreography is a combination of the highly systematized vocabulary of Bharatanatyam and the kinetic and bold approach of modern dance; which brings forth a true synthesis of modern art.

Featured Dance items: A tribute to Rabindranath Tagore and Ananda Shankar, folk Songs of Sri Lanka, Drums, Ghatam and Tabla. Student performers include Alpi Sinha, Shani Pascal, Sarmi Biswas, Smita Chehhda, Penelope Kalloo and Priyanka Pendharkar.
Dakshina Palli, Inc. Led by the dynamic artistic vision of Jaan R. Freeman. DPDC (Dakshina Palli Dance Company) a resident company of Dakshina Palli was established in 2005. It was jam packed event. Thanks to everyone for making another event a huge success. For me it was very interesting to see how dedicated Dakshinapalli dancers are. Inspite of being Indian it was difficult for me to master Abhinaya as I don't speak any of Southern Indian languages in which dances are usually choreographed, my congratulations to Jaan Freeman, Penelope Kalloo Shani Paskal and others who are devoted to Tanjore Balasaraswati's lineage. It was true synthesis of Bharatnatyam and western modern dance form which reached out beyond the barriers of race, color, national and ethnic origins. Out of all the items presented - (Ganesh Kauthavam, Ragmalika Jatiswaram, folk songs of Sri Lanka, Yajurveda chants, Drum Ghatam Tabla) "Ananda" is my all time favourite.

It is always nice to have art galleries like tamarind. These will give us a chance to get relaxed from our day to day work and get ourselves refreshed. Arts will have a lot of internal meaning in that and not every body will be able to understand it. so it is always better to visit these kind of galleries and listen to the explanation given by them then only you can understand clearly what it is. so do not miss any exhibition and it gives you a lot of info...

Tamarind art gallery is the one which stresses on Indian arts. there are many artists who work with Tamarind and each persons work is so unique from others and the way they present their work is so elegant. that is the reason why i do not miss any exhibitions at Tamarind and this time i will definitely make a visit to the gallery to view the current exhibition

when it comes to arts Tamarind is the best one. the reason why i am telling this is generally anyone can understand the arts only when they listen the meaning behind the art in words of he artist. but generally in art galleries you can find the arts but not the artists so the explanation given by others may not be in full fledged manner and so we may not be satisfied with that.

this is the general case but not here in Tamarind. here you will always have a chance to meet the artists and the speak to them. and it is a wonderful experience to get a chance like this. i visited tamarind 5 times upto now and each time i get great response and respect from the people there and they are so friendly and they are ready to explain us until we understood that. that is the reason why i like tamarind.

if you have a doubt then you also can check it out and then you will only agree to my words...

Tamarind is definitely the place to go to for pure artistic expression. I have not missed a show at Tamarind and do not ever intend to. The staff is always very friendly and it is great that one can meet the artists whose work is being displayed. Galleries like Tamarind are a rare find, the performances they hold there go without comparison. The student performers of Dakshinapalli were stellar, a great amalgamation of dancing styles!! I will definitely be at the next show!

This is sure a trend setter. I was so amazed by the fusion of two dance forms: the Indian Classical , Bharatanayam and the American Modern dance. I had a great time that evening.

I was so amazed by the dancer. It inspired me to see how young and focus they where. Tamarind Art gallery is leading the way in contemporary art. They've found a way to display the art and culture of India in New York city like I've never seen before.
