Kamal Mitra- “Oblique Memoir”
It has been nearly a year and half since Tamarind Art has been able to showcase one of its most powerful and thought provoking artists, Kamal Mitra. Tamarind Art Council would like to welcome our frineds back to the gallery with a second solo exhibition, “Oblique Memoir”, featuring oil, acrylic and charcoal on canvas consistent with critically acclaimed exhibitions of the winter of 2006 and the fall of 2007. “Oblique memoir” is an internal monologue by means of which unfortunate events of Kamal Mitra’s life is broken into fragments of memory, which replicate and document the cacophony of emotions he experienced in recent time past.

An opening reception was held on March 19, 6:30-8:00PM

Exhibition runs through: March 19-April 30, 2009
This is a wonderful show that should not be missed.

Extraordinary to behold, these large format paintings by Kamal Mitra are masterpieces that vibrate with color, intensity and mystery, simultaneously reinvigorating a format that arose over a thousand years ago and still expanding its limits through an ingenious use of scale and subject. The viewer is enticed to explore the intricate and minutely detailed wrinkles, the elegant folds and subdued scars of the skin as it hangs from protagonist’s twisted torso with its shadows finely painted on the canvas beneath. Finally Mitra's contribution in Contemporary Indian art is recognized by main stream and it was a proud moment where his work proved it's potential at Christie's recent auction.

Impressive and inspiring. A stunning exhibit that leaves the viewer simply in awe. Kamal Mitras work is compelling and awards a range of emotions to the viewer from one magnificent piece to the next. The larges canvases were extremely effective and transformed the viewer to part of the work itself. An important contribution to Indian Contemporary art.

This show is incredible! I have now seen 3 shows with Kamal Mitra's work and each time it blows me away. His work is very powerful, there is an image of a man screaming that is just incredible! you feel all the pain and emotion this artist is conveying that thought of it gives me shivers.

The compositions are extremely detailed, viewing them in person is the only way the pieces can be truly appreciated. I especially took a liking to the painting with the man screaming, such an emotional piece. I enjoyed this show a great deal, special thanks to the gallery for having such a beautiful display of talent.
